Dare Me by Megan Abbott

The book is just missing heart.

It’s about rogue cheerleaders. The evil of bored teen girls. The extent they’ll go to get revenge.

(Total Heathers vibe).

The writing was lovely – some of the lines made me stop and reread them. And it’s that sparse underdoneness that is my groove – my jam. The characters were tight. The entire book stayed on edge. Twists everywhere.

But without heart how do you keep your reader reading? What makes them stay? For me the writing and Addy were enough to keep going – but barely. I was entranced but not invested.

There was no toe-curling moment. No satisfaction. But it’s an edgy pretty book. Something to read when you don’t wanna feel.
