A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman

I hate the movie “It’s A Wonderful Life.” It’s an unpopular opinion – but there it is. And I felt the same way about this book.

I think this is supposed to be a feel-good thing. Ove is sad and lonely, but then it gets better. Yeah Ove! But Ove is a crappy person, so I don’t care if his life improves.

I know that a lot of people love this book. I don’t begrudge them that. The writing is decent – simple and flowing. And I think someone other than me could find Ove funny and quirky. It is possible that this story could lift ones spirits and cause them to cry sweet happy tears. It’s also possible that the story could be boring and draggy. And the reader could wish that Ove would just go away bc he’s needlessly mean and wretched and awful. I don’t think I’m Ove’s target audience.
