A Darker Shade of Magic by VE Schwab

This book wasn’t anything like I was expecting. It was darker and more magical. Also the characters were stronger than anticipated. Plus it really kept me on the edge of my seat.
Kell works magic and travels between words. Lila is a thief. Through his magic and her stealing they get into a pickle – a huge epic pickle.
There’s a lot of magic. A lot of death. And I spent at least 1/4 of the book on the edge of my seat. The writing was pretty enough – but it didn’t need to be over the top flowery. That would have messed with the story.
Kell and Lila were the strong points. They were so likable and strong and funny and magic and bad ass and awesome.
I suspected this book would be a little frivolous – a little shallow. I was pleasantly surprised. I’m off to download the second one now!
